It can be frustrating if a Laptop does not function properly. Especially when the laptop is specify for a particular purpose or personal use, so it's a worrisome situation when our laptop has problem. As it might not be easy and quick to troubleshoot and repair some common laptop problems either software or hardware.
That's why I bring you some tips to help you know how to repair or fix these common laptop problems without having to go to a technician.
Common Laptop Problems and Repair
1. Power Failure
Common laptop problems is when it fails to light up. After pressing the power button and your PC fails to switch on. This prevent you to access your important laptop files, programs and data. However, if you notice that your Laptop seems dead and it doesn't light up or make sounds.
The first thing to do, is to be certain that your laptop is charged. But if it wasn't charged then the failure is from the AC adapter. So test the AC adapter with a voltmeter, or Megger (tester), new AC adapter. If you can't find the failure from the AC adapter then it may be the DC jack that failed. Hence, the reason your computer was unable to keep power. Besides, the failure may also comes from the motherboard.
2. Blank Screen
This can be frustrating when your Laptop shows a black screen as you won't be able to use your PC. Especially when the PC shows a sign of light and sound, this seems it's functioning but for the blank screen.
Firstly, take a step to disconnect the PC from the power source and also take out the battery. Then, hold the power button for some seconds before you connect it to the power source. Insert the laptop battery to restart again.
It might be memory failure if the aforementioned tips do not work. Check the memory modules if there is need to change them.
Moreover, you can take a look at the hard drive, keyboard, or modem to know the cause of the problem. The motherboard or the processor is likely the cause after you have gone through these tests and your PC screen remains blank.
3. Flickering Display
When you notice that your laptop fails to hold charge: that is a repeated turn on and off. This may resort to a complete shutdown of the laptop, or cause the screen to have a flickering display. You can check the memory modules to know the cause or replace them. But if the problem persists, the cause might be from the motherboard.
4. Bizzare Sounds
Sometimes, the noise of laptop while on is due to the rotation of the fan. However, if the laptop makes some bizarre noise such that the noise is grinding or rattling. Look out for the cooling fan and change it.
Besides, the persistence of the noise even when the fan is not rotating also implies that the bizzare sounds might be coming from the hard drive. Change the hard drive but don't forget to back up your essential files.
5 System Shutdown.
The frustration that comes when your laptop freezes or shutdown leads to loss of data and unsaved files even saved files.
Possibly, you encountered this problem; press the buttons to test them, check if the PC is hot or the fan is working abnormally because it might be a heating issue.
Do a thorough cleaning of the fan and heat sink in order to avoid clogs and over heating of the processor.
6. The battery does not charge properly
It might be an easy fix when laptop is not properly charged by adjusting the plug of the AC adapter. As the problem might be frayed or damaged cord.
However, If it's the battery that got damaged, then you need to replace it.
7. Dim Screen Light
It is certain your eyes will be strained when your laptop screen light dims at an attempt to view the screen display. Possibly, due to the irregular functionality of the backlight lamp or screen inverter. Therefore, it's a necessity for you change the hardware components in order to repair the screen light issue.
8. Distorted Image on the Screen
To use your PC may be difficult when the screen display is distorted. The image seems warped or showing no colours. Make use of an external monitor to know the cause. But if the image appears distorted on the external monitor, then the problem comes from your graphics card. However, if the problem only persist on your laptop screen; there is a problem with your video cable, screen, or motherboard.
9. Keyboard keys stopped working
While typing you do notice missing letters or wrong character. This problem might be caused by stuck keys. Therefore, make an attempt to carefully clean underneath the key caps, this should resolve the problem. If it persist, change the keyboard.
10. Beeping Repetition
Start-up beeps are expected when laptop is powered on. But there are times the beep comes repetitiously with a blank display.
Press your keyboard repeatedly as the problem might be caused by a stuck key.
